How I promote my blog: 10 Proved and Insightful steps to follow

- - Blogging

I was having a nap yesterday when I received a phone call that literally destroyed my sleep. So what was it about?

How do I promote a website/blog? That was the question the person had asked me. This is the question most newbie bloggers ask, isn’t it?

Truth is I asked this same question at some point too. As a matter of fact, I recently asked some of my friends that same question; “how do I promote my blog?” What I realize is that, there are many ways of promoting ones blog. It’s literally up to you to decide which way.

I know you are like how does that concern me? Well, I’m sharing this article not because of you but because of you, I mean newbie bloggers. 🙂

Here’s an excerpt of our conversation:

Shinene: Sam, what do I do when no one is coming to my brand new shiny website/blog?

Me: To promote your blog, Shinene, you could make use of a press conference, affiliate marketing, search engine, social media and what have you…..

Now, I didn’t really explain it to her, so I will be doing just that here in this article and I’m sure it would mean a lot to her and most newbie bloggers out there.

So let’s go straight to business…..

How I promote my blog: 10 Proved and Insightful steps to follow:

Blog Promotion

#1: Viral Content

I’m sure you have heard these word over and over again that, “Content is the key”. It’s no joke, my friend. It sure is. Providing content on your blog is the first step towards website/blog promotion. And my advice to aspiring bloggers is not just to provide contents but to provide great contents. Trust me nothing can take the place of quality content. Once this is achieved, blog promotion would be very easy.

#2: Do Some Submission

If I were you the first thing I’d do while starting up a new website/blog is submitting my site URL to search engines. I mean major search engines, like Google dot com, the king of search engines, Bing, Yahoo and so and so fort. Search engine traffic, otherwise known as organic traffic is a major means of driving traffic to a website/blog and most webmasters gets their traffic from this means. Most of the major search engines have a specific page you can use to submit your site. Once it’s submitted, it will usually take a few days to a week before it starts showing up in keyword searches. Trust me with visits from search engine spiders you will get more website traffic as your site climbs higher on the search engines.

#3: Affiliation

Another one that comes to mind is affiliation. This is a good method of not only promoting your new site, but an easy fashion of making some quick money as well. How this works is you sign up for an affiliation to a site, generally you will want to find a site that has some relevance to the site you are trying to promote. When ever someone goes to the site you are affiliated with, and they link on to your site by pay per click method it takes them to your site and right into the thick of your content.  So with this, you are 1) promoting your website/blog and 2) you are making some extra bucks for yourself. Isn’t that interesting?

#4: Advertisement

Another website promotion idea includes advertising your website on Internet message boards and discussion forums centered on subjects related in some way to your business. For example, if you run a small business selling pet supplies, you could go to message boards and discussion forums frequented by pet lovers. Doing this will drive some significant amount of traffics to your blog. Trust me it works.

#5: Guest Blog

Guest blogging is another sure way of promoting a website/blog. My friend Gilbert Samuel is a constant guest blogger, you can read his testimonials of what and how guest blogging has transcended his blog to the top. This fact can not be overemphasized.  Gilbert wrote a guide on guest blogging lately – see it here.

#6: Social Media

Social media is another sure way of promoting your blog and getting traffic. You can do this by making use of the sharing option whereby every of the articles you published will be automatically posted on your connected social networking sites. You can also take advantage of the many “Facebook Groups”.

#7: Public Forums

There are several public forums and places for discussion on the internet. Search for forums that you like, take part to the discussion and leave your link under your signature. Remember to leave some quality posts, if you will just leave links you’ll be easily banned.

#8: Tell a Friend

By placing a “tell a friend” script or plugin on your website, you give visitors the option to refer your website to others. If you continuously add new content you will build up a list of returning visitors who will begin referring your website to others, thus generating more website traffic.

#9: Press Releases

This form of marketing is often overlooked by internet marketers. It is a completely free way to quickly generate more website traffic easily. All you have to do is have a subject announcing a new product you sell or something newsworthy and submit it to online press release companies. If it is written well enough you can then have it be picked up by top search engines such as Yahoo and Google.

#10: Make a Newsletter

This may sound like hard work because of all the articles you may need to use to build a newsletter but on the contrary, this is not so. There are many writers and sites that are willing to provide free articles as long as they can get their name in on your newsletter. This will also provide free advertising for them as well.As your newsletter gets pass around, you can widen your public awareness and build an opt-in list that can regularly visit your site.

Conclusion

This are sure ways of promoting your website/blog and one which I’m now using to drive traffic to my 2 month old blog. You too can make use of it to drive traffic and if done properly will crash your blog! 🙂

  1. Hey Sam

You are doing great. Blog promotion is very important. The most important factor in blog promotion is having quality content. I still so much believe that content is king. So much people focus on Google only. I’ve read so many testimonies of how Bing and yahoo drives traffic also. There should be a balance.

The most effective way of promoting one’s blog is guest blogging. If the content is good, the traffic will keep coming in.

    • Hey Abraham, I’m highly honored to see you here on Sriram’s blog and also that you were the first to comment. 🙂 Thanks!

I so much agree with your stated points, they holds to be true. Let me quote you; 1) Blog promotion is very important. Oh sure it is cus it is the best way of bringing traffic, that is people to your blog. Without this phenomenon being put in place, your blog will inevitably suffer the consequences. 2) It’s one thing to promote and another to promote good stuffs, that is good contents, isn’t it? Without quality contents, every blogger would have been a joke, even the great”Seth Godin”. 3) Yes, promoting with Google is good but you must also try other means such as the ones you mentioned here. Redit is cool too as well as Squiddo. And lastly, Guest blogging. That’s the key of driving traffic but again quality content is highly needed. I love the way you put it, “If the content is good, the traffic will keep coming in.” Fact!

Abraham, you sure got the intent of this post. 🙂

Thanks for adding extra value to it, man. It’s much appreciated.

  7. Hello Sam,

These are lovely tips and you really nailed it. My philosophy of blogging has always been centered on delivering great contents, that why I pick your first point as my favorite. There is nothing that can replace great content delivery, even if you perform all the others without good contents, you won’t retain the visitors and ultimately won’t become a reader.

Great article buddy, enjoy the rest of the day

    • Hey Nosa, I am really thrilled to have you here. 🙂

That philosophy my friend, is the greatest philosophy every bloggers must follow in other to achieve success and excellence in this blogging journey.

Great and excellent filled contents is what I always preach and I hope my blogger friends listen to it. I’m particularly glad I found a blogging great attest to that same fact.

Content has been and will always be the KING no matter what! I am a constant traveler of the blogosphere and I hate it when I come across contents that I have read somewhere else or that is poorly written. Aha! You should know how it feels now.

    • Hey Sharma, I celebrate you!

This is the question that every serious bloggers ask and one that literally need a strong answer and that is what actually fueled the scribbling down of this post.

Oh I will be so glad if you would do that, Sharma and Please do let me know if this process work you and this your folks. You know how to find me, right?

  11. Good tips indeed. Some time ago I was agonizing on this particular issue. After some thought I worked out a simple step of adding commentluv to the blog, doing a monthly top commentators reward package and then doing some blog commenting. This was really great in return as I soon began to see an average 30-plus comments per month.

However, after some time I realized that it is not really about getting blog comments but what type of traffic you are looking for. I regard myself not just as a blogger but an entrepreneur. I desire to see results from all the time spent on writing blog posts and running around commenting. And so today, I’m more about driving the right type of traffic to my blog. And frankly, I’ve found SEO traffic to be the best answer to that.

The point here is that when you thinking of promoting your blog the first thing is what type of traffic are you aiming to drive with your promotions. Get that well and most of the pains will be removed.

    Thanks for sharing.

  12. Social media these days have redefined the way contents are shared so i will recommend anyone looking to promote his site takes it seriously. There is another area often overlooked and i have been funneling quality traffic from it, its called content curation. I use curation sites like list.ly, scoop.it, meddly, stority, etc and i can authoritatively tell you that you can drive quality traffic from it as well as backlinks.

    • Hi Nwosu, I’m glad you came. 🙂

Sure bro, being serious is the key. Wow! This are great ways of crashing your server…. I am on listly.ly and sccop.it but I am yet to make use of it myself but have been using Bizsugar and Klinkk. Will check out the other ones.

Thanks for adding this tips. It sure is much appreciated! 😀

      Sam

  13. Hi Sam,

I agree each of those tips are great and working to drive in more traffic. Still, I’m quite confused with your #3 point. Do you mean display the affiliate links in our website or get some affiliate links on other blogs? If you place other’s links in your blog, how will you get more traffic?

I guess you need to clarify that point a bit with some examples if possible.

  14. Nice post! i really love your tips. No doubt guest posting is awesome way to promote blog without any money. Social media is also important for free promotion.

    thanks

  15. Informative post, Social media and guest posting are brilliant ideas to promote the blogs and we can assume the huge improvement in traffic in short time. All the mentioned tips are really informative.

    Thanks

  16. Promoting site via social media and guest blogging are two methods that have worked for me quite well. Social media gets you traffic and branding, while guest blogging promotes your site with solid backlinks. Good tips.

  17. Hi Sam,
Thanks for the great and helpful stuff. All points are well described and practically proven by most of the famous bloggers.
